Newcastle Eagles bring Trevond Barnes back to British basketball

Newcastle Eagles have brought Trevond Barnes back to British basketball, making the former Caledonia Gladiators forward their first new import signing for the 2026/27 Super League Basketball season.

The 6’9 forward joins Marc Steutel’s side after spending last season in Portugal’s top division with Imortal Albufeira, a club he also represented in 2023/24 before first coming to the UK.

Barnes played for Caledonia during the 2024/25 campaign and averaged 12.6 points, 5.7 rebounds and shot 37.5% from three-point range per game.

Steutel said Barnes was an “important signing” for Newcastle and praised his front-court production, maturity and team-first approach.

“He is an excellent, proven front-court player with production,” Steutel told the club’s official website. “His skillset, maturity and team-first approach will be so important for us in an area of the team where we want to ensure we are stronger.”

Barnes graduated from NCAA Division I programme Hampton University in 2019 and has also played professionally in Luxembourg, Georgia, France and Portugal.

His move gives Newcastle another experienced SLB-ready option as they continue shaping their roster for the new season. It also means Eagles supporters will see a familiar opponent in home colours, after Barnes faced Newcastle during his time with the Gladiators.

Barnes said Newcastle’s history and fanbase were major attractions and added that his previous SLB experience should help him lead in key situations.
