England Set for Jr. NBA Rome Test Against European Opposition

England’s next generation of basketball talent is set for a valuable international test this weekend, with boys’ and girls’ teams travelling to Rome for an elite Jr. NBA tournament on 11 and 12 July.

The event will be staged at the 600-capacity Palafonte Roma venue and gives England’s young players a chance to measure themselves against strong European opposition in a tournament setting.

Basketball England confirmed that the boys’ competition will feature England, hosts Italy, Denmark and the Netherlands. The girls’ competition will also include England, Italy and Denmark, with Germany replacing the Netherlands in that draw.

The trip forms part of the England Talent Programme, which is designed to expose players and coaches to different playing styles, competitive environments and international standards before potential progression towards Great Britain selection.

Basketball England’s Head of Talent and Performance Steve Bucknall said the trip offers another “marquee tournament” opportunity against leading European nations, adding that exposing players to different challenges remains a core aim of the pathway.

For English basketball, the value is not just in the results. These trips give young players early experience of travel, preparation, scouting and tournament pressure — all important parts of development for those hoping to move further along the national pathway.
