Andy McSweeney Named GB Basketball General Manager as Rebuild Continues

Andy McSweeney has been appointed Great Britain Basketball General Manager as the national programme continues its governance reset.

McSweeney joins on an initial eight-month secondment from UK Sport and will provide strategic leadership across GB Basketball senior and age-group teams, with a particular focus on the 3×3 programme’s push towards Los Angeles 2028 Olympic qualification.

The 45-year-old, from Gloucester, has worked as Performance Advisor Lead at UK Sport across Olympic and Paralympic World Class Programmes. Basketball England also noted senior roles with Team GB, including Deputy Head of the Performance Lodge at Tokyo 2020 and Paris 2024.

He will work closely with Dan Clark, Head of the Senior Men’s programme, Dominique Allen, Head of the Senior Women’s programme, and Alice Hamilton, who is leading the GB 3×3 push for LA28.

Appointment comes during GB rebuild

The appointment sits alongside the work of the GB Interim Delivery Group, which was put in place after the liquidation of the former British Basketball Federation. The group is chaired by Newcastle Eagles owner Paul Blake and includes representatives from Basketball England, Basketball Scotland, Basketball Wales, Super League Basketball and British Championship Basketball.

Basketball England said stakeholder consultation on the future structure and governance model for the sport is under way and is due to be completed by the end of March 2027.

McSweeney’s early brief includes developing and delivering the 3×3 programme, supporting the UK Sport Olympic cycle investment process and leading the overall Olympic Games project.

For British basketball, the move is another important step in rebuilding stability around the national-team setup after a turbulent period off the court.
