Super League Basketball has launched the Basketball Advanced Sports Emergencies course, known as BASE, as a new training programme for medical staff working in the sport.

The league describes BASE as a basketball-specific course designed to strengthen courtside teams’ knowledge, technical skills and awareness when responding to time-critical emergencies.

The programme was designed by SLB Chief Medical Officer Dr Amir Pakravan and is being delivered first as a two-day course for medical staff across the men’s and women’s leagues in Sheffield later this month.

SLB said the course has been built around the particular demands of basketball, including high-intensity changes of direction, jumping, contact, hard playing surfaces and the physical profile of elite basketball athletes.

The course combines clinical knowledge, emergency planning, hands-on practical training and scenario-based learning. It has also received approval from the European College of Sports and Exercise Physicians for joint certification.

Pakravan said BASE was created to improve the quality and consistency of courtside care and to make sure medical teams are equipped for emergencies that can occur in basketball.

The long-term ambition is for the programme to become available to medical professionals supporting basketball players at every level, making this a notable player-safety development for the British game beyond the professional leagues.
