A proposed NBA Europe franchise in London has reportedly attracted an offer worth more than $1 billion before the team has even been formally created.
Eurohoops, citing reporting from The New York Times, says American technology executive Nikesh Arora has assembled a consortium of investors prepared to offer more than $1 billion — around £740 million — for the London slot in the NBA and FIBA-backed competition.
The figure is striking because there is currently no confirmed team name, roster or final venue for London. It does, however, show how valuable the UK capital is expected to be if NBA Europe launches as planned in the second half of 2027.
NBA.com reported in July that the proposed league is being built around 16 teams: 12 permanent franchises and four annual qualifiers. Its list of target cities includes London and Manchester, alongside Athens, Barcelona, Berlin, Istanbul, Lyon, Madrid, Milan, Munich, Paris and Rome.
The NBA said bids for the 12 permanent teams were due at the end of June, with several reported bids falling within or above the $500 million to $1 billion range in the target markets.
Why London matters
London has long been viewed as one of the NBA’s most important international markets. The league has staged regular-season and showcase games in the city before, and the London Lions’ forthcoming pre-season meeting with the Portland Trail Blazers has added further attention around the capital’s basketball potential.
For UK basketball fans, the bigger question is what a London-based NBA Europe team would mean for the domestic game. A permanent franchise could bring new investment, visibility and elite-level events, but it would also enter a crowded sporting market and need to build a fanbase from scratch.
The NBA has continued to stress that the European project remains tied to FIBA and is designed to fit around domestic leagues and national-team competitions. No London franchise has been awarded yet, and the reported $1 billion figure should be treated as a bid rather than a confirmed sale price.
Still, the message is clear: even before tip-off, London is being priced as one of the centrepieces of NBA Europe.
