Sheffield Hatters begin quadruple defence with a new challenge

Megan Mullings drives for a lay-up for Sheffield Hatters against Caledonia Gladiators in the 2026 SLB Play-off Final

Sheffield Hatters begin life as the team everyone wants to beat when they visit Cardiff Met Archers on Saturday afternoon, opening the 2026/27 Women’s Super League Basketball Championship with the weight of a historic clean sweep behind them.

The official SLB schedule lists a 1.30pm tip-off on Saturday, 3 October at Archers Arena.[3] For Vanessa Ellis and her players, that is the first meaningful test of whether last season’s dominance can become sustained success rather than a single extraordinary campaign.

A sweep that changed the challenge

Sheffield won the league, Cup, Betty Codona Trophy and play-offs in 2025/26, completing the quadruple with a 73-66 Play-off Final win over Caledonia Gladiators at The O2.[1][2] The finalists had both gone 15-3 in the regular season, with the Hatters taking the title on points difference, before Sheffield built a 20-point advantage in the final and survived Caledonia’s late surge.[2]

That ending captured both their quality and the standard required to stay on top. Megan Mullings, named the league’s Player of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year, was Player of the Game in the final, while Ellis had already collected Coach of the Year honours.[2]

A literal repeat is not available this time: the SLB Cup has been removed from the women’s programme, leaving the Hatters with three trophies to defend.[1] The challenge, however, may be no smaller. Ellis told the *Yorkshire Post* that Sheffield did not operate with a budget “way bigger than everybody else’s” and warned that, after such a dominant year, “everybody wants to come and beat us”.[1]

Continuity without standing still

Sheffield have not attempted to preserve the quadruple-winning group unchanged. Their currently published SLB roster retains experienced contributors Jess Eadsforth-Yates, Nina Krisper, Chantel Charles and Shauna Harrison, while teenage guard Ella Wright is also listed.[4] That gives Ellis players who already understand her standards and the scrutiny that follows success.

Alongside them, the same official list includes Tierra Hodges, Tia Morgan, Laycee Drake, Mia Jaye Sarkodee-Adoo and Rachel Cockman.[1][4] It is a substantial refresh around the returning core, designed to renew competition and energy without discarding the habits that produced four trophies.

Hodges is the headline addition because she brings proven production and immediate knowledge of Sheffield’s leading rivals. The American forward averaged 17.7 points, 9.4 rebounds and 1.9 assists for Caledonia in 2025/26 after posting 19.1 points and 8.9 rebounds for Newcastle Eagles the season before.[5] She was on the other side in May’s final and scored Caledonia’s opening basket; now she joins the champions whose transition attack and interior play helped build the decisive early gap that day.[2]

Her arrival provides rebounding and scoring without requiring a lengthy introduction to the league. More importantly, it gives Sheffield a player accustomed to carrying a major offensive load when opponents scheme specifically to stop her.

Cardiff starts the examination

The opener is not a referendum on an entire title defence, but it will show how quickly the reconstructed group can translate reputation into performance. Sheffield must integrate new roles, establish combinations and handle an away fixture while every opponent has the quadruple winners circled.

That is the tension surrounding the new season. The retained players offer continuity; Hodges and the other additions create a different ceiling. Yet Sheffield’s greatest opponent may be the comfort that can follow unprecedented success. At Cardiff, the Hatters’ task is to demonstrate that last season’s sweep has sharpened their appetite rather than satisfied it.
