London Lions prospect Emilis Zibuda scored 10 points on his professional debut as the champions defeated Liverpool Basketball 78–49 at the Copper Box Arena on Sunday.
The 18-year-old added four rebounds in an encouraging first senior appearance, helping London improve to 4–0 in the Super League Basketball Championship. It was also the Lions’ first home league victory of the season and the first SLB meeting between the two clubs.[1]
Zibuda makes an immediate contribution
Zibuda entered during the second quarter and quickly connected from three-point range as London began to turn a tight contest into a controlled victory. He added another three in the fourth quarter before a steal helped create a transition dunk for Thomas Kennedy.[1]
The production built on the reputation Zibuda established before joining the senior roster. London signed the 6ft 7in guard-forward in June after he developed with the London Stars and Layton Christian Academy. He had also represented the Lions at the EuroLeague Adidas Next Generation Tournament, averaging 14 points, 4.5 rebounds, two assists and two steals across two games.[7]
One productive debut does not define his role for the season, particularly in a deep squad preparing for domestic and European competition. It does, however, offer an early indication that head coach Tautvydas Sabonis can trust the teenager to contribute rather than simply occupy a developmental roster place.
London’s defence overwhelms Liverpool
London’s main advantage came at the defensive end. The Lions forced 27 turnovers and restricted Liverpool to nine points in the third quarter, transforming a 37–26 half-time advantage into a 57–35 lead after three.[1]
Kennedy led the scoring with 15 points and five rebounds. Keenan Evans supplied 11 points, four assists and four steals, while Maxwell Lewis and Ethan Price joined Zibuda on 10 points.[1]
Liverpool remained within two points after the opening quarter, but London’s depth, ball pressure and ability to create transition opportunities gradually separated the sides. Holding a professional opponent to 49 points was the clearest sign of the defensive identity Sabonis is trying to establish.
The Lions now take their unbeaten domestic start into a different level of examination. Their next assignment is the opening game of their EuroCup campaign away to Šiauliai in Lithuania.[1]
For Zibuda, that European schedule should provide both a challenge and an opportunity. His debut showed that he can make shots and generate energy in senior basketball; the next stage is earning repeat minutes as the standard of opposition rises.
