Euroleague Basketball will launch a new SuperCup in Abu Dhabi next month, adding a new international event to the European club calendar.

The first Euroleague Basketball SuperCup will be staged at Etihad Arena on Yas Island on 18 and 19 September, with Olympiacos Piraeus, Fenerbahce Tarfin Istanbul, Real Madrid and Dubai Basketball confirmed for the four-team event.

The competition will open the European club basketball season in a Final Four-style format. On Friday, 18 September, Olympiacos will face Fenerbahce at 18:00 GST, before Dubai Basketball take on Real Madrid at 21:00 GST. The third-place game and final will follow on Saturday, 19 September.

Euroleague Basketball said the new event has been launched with the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi, following the recent staging of the EuroLeague Final Four in the city. It is another sign of the competition’s push to expand beyond its traditional European footprint, with Dubai Basketball also entering the new season as one of the event’s headline participants.

For UK fans, the SuperCup gives an early look at some of Europe’s biggest clubs before domestic and continental schedules fully settle. It also adds another layer to the wider conversation around basketball’s global growth, from NBA Europe plans to the increasing role of the Gulf in staging elite club events.

Two-day ticket packages are already on sale via Etihad Arena, with single-day tickets due to go on sale from 31 August, subject to availability.
