Reports: Klay Thompson expected to join Miami Heat after Mavericks buyout

Klay Thompson, reportedly expected to join the Miami Heat after a Mavericks buyout

Klay Thompson is reportedly expected to sign with the Miami Heat after clearing waivers following a contract buyout with the Dallas Mavericks.

NBA.com, citing multiple reports, said the five-time All-Star and four-time NBA champion is set to become a free agent once he clears waivers, with Miami expected to be his next destination.

The move would add one of the league’s most recognised shooters to a new-look Heat roster. NBA.com noted that Thompson averaged 11.7 points and 2.1 rebounds for Dallas last season, while his two-year Mavericks spell produced averages of 12.9 points and 39% shooting from three-point range.

Thompson remains fourth on the NBA’s all-time three-pointers list. His career totals, as listed by NBA.com, stand at 19.6 points per game and 41% from beyond the arc, with 2,899 made threes behind only Stephen Curry, James Harden and Ray Allen.

The reported Heat move follows a short and difficult Dallas chapter for Thompson after his long Golden State Warriors career. He won four championships with the Warriors alongside Curry and Draymond Green, but missed two full seasons because of knee and Achilles injuries.

For Miami, the appeal is clear: more floor spacing around Giannis Antetokounmpo and Bam Adebayo. Until the move is formally completed, though, the key wording remains “expected” — Thompson still has to clear waivers before signing.
