Super League Basketball has confirmed that Chair Sanjay Bhandari MBE is stepping down, marking another important governance moment for the British professional game.
SLB said Bhandari played a central role during a “frenetic period” for professional basketball in Great Britain, helping provide leadership, stability and strategic direction while the sport went through substantial change.
The league highlighted his work with clubs, league executives and stakeholders, as well as progress around governance structures and SLB’s long-term vision. It also pointed to the league securing official recognition from FIBA during his tenure, describing that as an important step following the vacuum created by the collapse of the British Basketball Federation.
In the official announcement, Bhandari said it had been “an honour” to serve as SLB Chair during a period of uncertainty for the sport. He said the league had taken a leadership role and worked with colleagues across basketball to build relationships and structures for the future development of the professional game in Great Britain.
SLB Chief Operating Officer Andy Webb also paid tribute, saying Bhandari had brought “leadership, integrity and strategic clarity” during an important period for the sport.
No successor has been named yet. SLB said information on the appointment of a new Chair will be shared in due course.
For UK basketball readers, the next appointment will be worth watching closely. The league is coming off its first full Super League Basketball season, with major questions still surrounding long-term commercial growth, club stability, broadcast reach, women’s league development and the wider relationship between domestic basketball and international bodies.
