Tosan Evbuomwan has been named in Great Britain’s senior men’s squad for the upcoming FIBA EuroBasket 2029 Pre-Qualifying window, putting the Newcastle-born forward in line for his first senior men’s 5v5 camp.

Basketball England confirmed that Evbuomwan has been selected by head coach Marc Steutel, with GB preparing to face Switzerland away before returning to Newcastle to take on Slovakia.

The call-up adds another major step to one of British basketball’s most notable recent player journeys. Evbuomwan came through the Newcastle Eagles academy before moving to the United States for a college career at Princeton. He later featured in the NBA with the Memphis Grizzlies, Brooklyn Nets, New York Knicks and Detroit Pistons, and Basketball England says he was named NBA G League Finals MVP after a standout 2025-26 campaign.

His summer has already included a significant club move, with the 25-year-old signing for FC Barcelona ahead of the 2026-27 EuroLeague season. A senior GB debut would therefore arrive at a point when Evbuomwan’s profile is rising across both European and international basketball.

“Excitement is the word that stands out the most,” Steutel said in Basketball England’s announcement, describing Evbuomwan as an “exceptionally proud Brit”.

The Newcastle fixture against Slovakia gives the story an extra local edge. Evbuomwan was raised in the city and developed within the Eagles pathway, so the chance to make his senior GB bow on home soil would be a full-circle moment for one of the North East’s most successful basketball exports.

For GB, the selection also strengthens a squad looking to build momentum through the pre-qualifying window. Evbuomwan brings size, versatility and high-level professional experience at a time when British basketball is trying to reconnect its strongest overseas talent with the national team programme.
